During this holiday season, you may have been invited to a fabulous party or to a New-Year’s Eve Reception. And the dress code is Black Tie.
What is Black tie?
Black Tie is a clothing worn in formal evening social events. From British men of the 1860s to James Bond and Red Carpet, Black Tie refers to attire more formal than the standard suits, but less formal than the white tie and tails. It is usually consisted of a black dinner jacket with matching trousers, a white shirt, a black bow tie, black dress socks and formal black shoes. A waistcoat is an option, too.
The golden rule for looking as sharp as possible in Black Tie attire is to keep it simple, quality and minimalistic.
The Jacket
A quality black jacket suitable for a classic Black Tie attire should be well-tailored, minimalistic and timeless. Wool is one of the most proper materials, while it could be either single or double breasted.
The lapel of the jacket should be peak. A peak lapel is defined by edges pointing upwards to the shoulders. It looks more special and it draws the eyes out the shoulders, which is very flattering.
The Trousers
The trousers should match the material of the jacket, unless the jacket is velvet. Slim-legged dinner trousers are the most appropriate and flattering.
The Shirt
The shirt should be white, made of a simple and quality fabric. For a Black Tie attire it should have a turn down collar. A wing collar is more suitable for White Tie. The shirt should look clean, minimalistic and timeless. It could be beautifully worn with classic cufflinks – silver, gold, black or white.
The Shoes
The shoes should be black and formal. Brogue shoes are not appropriate. A pair of well polished simple round-toed patent lace-ups are a very classy and stylish option for a Black Tie attire.
Neckwear
The right neckwear for a Black Tie attire is a black bow-tie. The material could match the suit, but for a more subtle look the textures could be mixed. A matte-finish bow-tie would give a sharper finish to the outfit.
The Accessories
First of all, the hair and the grooming should be perfect in order to exactly match the overall sharp and tidy look. You could add a little more something to your outfit by using a silk pocket square. The socks should be black, made of silk or cashmere. The most daring, could experiment with silk scarves or fancy jewels, but it is important to maintain the clean, simple, minimalistic and quality look.
Using these helpful tips you will be rocking the Black Tie event right.
