Creating a sharp suit from scratch is a man’s highest form of luxury.
Some days ago, me and Panos – the man behind Kourlas House – wore our dapper bespoke suits and walked through the centre of Athens. Final stop was the legendary Zonar’s cafe, where we had an interesting talk about our common passion… bespoke tailoring!
The Suits
Panos Kourlas respects Italian style and his main aim is to create clothes that are fashionable, yet refined and lightweight. This was our common aim for creating my suit. I wanted a suit that could be both stylish, yet classic, flattering and majestic. And I can say that Kourlas managed to materialise my desire with flying colors!
Prince-de-Galles check pattern is a classic and old-school fabric, that has found place in the wardrobe of today’s sharpest dressers, bringing vintage elegance to every outfit. When styled properly, prince-de-Galles, looks dapper, sartorial and distinguished.
A well-tailored prince-de-galles 3-piece suit could not be missing from any man’s wardrobe, therefore I visited Kourlas to create mine! I selected a Super 130 Loropiana fabric, a delicate, lightweight and fine fabric perfect for multi-seasonal use.
Panos’ gorgeous grey 3-piece bespoke suit is made of Loropiana Super 170 wool/silk fabric in windowpane pattern. The windowpane pattern is at the top of the list of patterns. It is bold, yet elegant and powerful, yet classic. It might be the perfect pattern for various reasons. Firstly, the pattern adds a little something to your outfit and easily separates you from the crowd, without looking too loud. It is classy, creative and elegant. Although it is simple to be combined, the windowpane pattern is definitely a bold statement.
Both our shirts are also made by Kourlas, while the handmade beautiful ties and pocket squares by ΚΥΔΟΣ and the elegant watches by Longines embellished our looks!
The House
40 years ago, Nikolaos Kourlas opened his own tailor shop in the centre of Athens in the vision of creating unique and distinctive handmade men’s clothing. Therefore, he managed to create bespoke (not made-to-measure) garments from scratch, with the use of custom-made patterns based on the customer’s measurements and needs. Hand-sawn men’s suits made of high quality fabrics, but most of all garments endowed with a remarkable character.
Today, the house is run by the second generation, Panagiotis and Petra Kourlas, who grew up into the family business, a fact that molded their personal aesthetic quality and love for men’s clothing.
Philosophy
Panagiotis and Petra get inspired by the character of each customer, which is also a big challenge. Each person is unique to them and they manage to create garments that respond perfectly to their style while bringing out their beautiful characteristics. They respect and follow style, but they also focus on the customer’s personal taste.
Their advice to every man is to trust their tailor, enjoy the procedure and be open to experiment with new things, to achieve an attractive and personalized result. Developing a relationship of trust with the tailor would help the customer discover his own style, but most of all implement the suit that features and completes his unique personality.
