Who can say no to the iconic turtleneck and suit combo?
The 70s are back and today on It’s a MAN’s Class we are talking about one of the most iconic pieces, the turtleneck sweater! It was considered to be a piece of menswear royalty, while it was a signature item icons like James Bond, Steve Jobs and Steve Mc Queen.
Into modern times, the turtleneck sweater can give an elegant accent of retro-inspired style. Oozing a masculine, bold and refined aura, it can bring sleek sophistication and elegance to any outfit. Especially when worn with a suit, instead of the typical shirt and tie combination, we could definitely say that the turtleneck sweater is the epitome of elegance!
The turtleneck sweater is, also, very flattering as it can bring out your facial features and as being a lot more versatile that you might think, it can be worn with many different ways!
How To Wear It
The turtleneck sweater looks really good with a suit or a blazer, instead of the typical shirt an tie combination, blending a retro feel with a modern edge.
Choose a sweater made of a thin quality fabric (like cotton, merino wool or cashmere, as a luxurious alternative). A turtleneck sweater that is made of fine materials is flattering and chic, as it has a natural texture, ventilates well and retains its shape for a longer time. Turtleneck can also have a quite annoying and itchy feel on the neck and by getting a quality sweater you can avoid discomfort!
Start with solid dark colors (like grey, dark brown, black or charcoal) as they elevate a dressier look. Try to avoid any bold colors or adornments like pockets, buttons or thick seam lines, in order to preserve the elegance of the look.
You see how beautifully a thin black sweater blends with a charcoal pinstripe suit, as it looks both classy and stylish. This combination brings the right amount of coolness, without looking too casual, while being quite comfortable and warm. I completed my look with a camel overcoat (you can read here everything about the overcoat here) and a pair of bespoke black Oxford shoes.
